PSLV to Launch ISRO-CNES TRISHNA Earth Observation Mission
The PSLV is scheduled to launch the Indo-French TRISHNA Earth observation mission next year. TRISHNA is a collaborative mission between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French Space Agency Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES).
TRISHNA Mission:
| Dimension | Key Details |
|---|---|
| Full form | TRISHNA comprises Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment. |
| Monitoring variables | The mission provides for monitoring of Earth’s surface temperature, emissivity, biophysical variables, and radiation variables for surface energy budgeting at regional to global scale. |
| Objectives | The mission provides for: detailed monitoring of energy and water budgets of the continental biosphere for quantifying terrestrial water stress and water use; high-resolution observation of water quality and dynamics in coastal and inland waters; assessment of urban heat islands and detection of thermal anomalies linked to volcanic activity and geothermal resources; monitoring of snow-melt runoff and glacier dynamics; data on aerosol optical depth, atmospheric water vapor, and cloud cover. |
| Payloads | The TRISHNA satellite comprises 2 primary payloads. |
| Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) payload | The TIR payload is provided by CNES and comprises a four-channel long-wave infrared imaging sensor capable of high-resolution surface temperature and emissivity mapping. |
| VNIR-SWIR payload | The Visible–Near Infra-Red–ShortWave Infra-Red (VNIR-SWIR) payload is developed by ISRO and comprises 7 spectral bands designed for mapping surface reflectance of VSWIR bands for generating biophysical and radiation budget variables. |
| Orbit and altitude | The mission provides for a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 761 km. |
| Spatial resolution | This orbit provides for a spatial resolution of 57 meters for land and coastal areas, and 1 km for oceanic and polar regions. |
| Operational life | The mission provides for a 5-year operational life. |
| Global initiatives supported | TRISHNA’s data provides for contributions to GEOGLAM for agricultural monitoring, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and targets, and the Global Water Watch. |
| Standardised outputs | Some mission outputs comprise Essential Agricultural Variables (EAVs), and Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) for the global community. |
