Q 366 / 370

UPSC CSE Prelims 2011

If a bus travels 160km in 4 hours and a train trave1s 320 km in 5 hours at uniform speeds, then what is the ratio of the distances travelled by them in one hour?

EXPLANATION

Correct Option (B)

To determine the ratio of distances travelled in one hour, the speed of each vehicle must first be calculated.

  • Distance covered by the bus in 4 hours = 160 km.
  • Distance covered by the bus in 1 hour (speed of bus) = 160 km / 4 hours = 40 km/hour.
  • Distance covered by the train in 5 hours = 320 km.
  • Distance covered by the train in 1 hour (speed of train) = 320 km / 5 hours = 64 km/hour.

The required ratio of the distances travelled by the bus to the train in one hour is:

Ratio = Speed of Bus : Speed of Train = 40 : 64

Simplifying the ratio by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor (8):

40/8 : 64/8 = 5 : 8

Incorrect Options:

  • Option (A) 8:5: This ratio would be obtained if the order of comparison was reversed (Train : Bus) or if an error in calculation occurred.
  • Option (C) 4:5: This ratio is not derived from the correct calculation of speeds and their subsequent simplification.
  • Option (D) 1:2: This ratio is significantly different from the correct calculation and would result from substantial errors in determining the speeds or their ratio.
