The parathyroid glands primarily regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis in the blood. Their main hormone, Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), is secreted directly in response to low blood calcium levels. This regulatory mechanism operates independently of direct control by tropic hormones from the pituitary gland.
